We had an amazing first week filled with learning and reconnecting! On Friday, students spent the entire day discovering what it means to be a Gurrie Middle School Tiger. Together, we focused on what it looks like to Be Ready, Be Respectful, and Be Safe—and we had a lot of fun along the way! Here are some pictures that capture our experience.

A school band performs, with students wearing 'Gurrie Tigers' shirts. Students wearing matching white shirts with a tiger design sit on a wooden floor. Three people wearing matching shirts with 'Gurrie Tigers' text pose for a photo.
Two girls in a school hallway react with excitement, one with arms raised. A teacher makes a peace sign with his fingers while students look on in a classroom. Two people stand on a dirt field near a green ball, possibly preparing for a game.
Young people playing a game on a grassy field with a soccer goal in the background. A group of young people play football on a grassy field. Three students and a teacher stand in front of a screen with the words 'Stairwell Etiquette'.

Monday marks the start of our first full week!

We will begin with a Gold Day, where students attend periods 1–4 and end the day in Advisory. On Tuesday, we will follow a Blue Day schedule, which includes periods 6–10.

To help students manage their responsibilities across multiple classes, we encourage them to use their daily planners consistently. One way you can support at home is by reviewing the planner together each day. This quick check-in not only helps your child stay organized but also shows them the importance of writing things down and keeping track of their learning.

Thank you for partnering with us in helping students build strong organizational habits that will serve them well throughout the year!

Open Library Every Morning
Our library is open every school day from 7:30–8:00 AM. Students are welcome to read, check out/return books, study quietly, or simply start the day in a calm space. They can head straight to the library upon arrival.

ACES and TST
ACES is a space where students can stop by the library to receive extra academic support. No sign-up needed. Teachers are available to help with any subject. Students may also use this time to study or read.

Tiger Support Time (TST) is designed for students who need additional time and support to complete assignments. Teachers may assign students to TST if work is missing or incomplete. Parents will receive a phone call if their student is signed up.

Both programs run until 4:00 PM. Students who ride the bus may take the late activity bus home.

Importance of Attendance

Attendance matters! Research indicates that students who attend school regularly are more likely to succeed academically, remain engaged, and form strong social connections. Missing just one day a month can add up and affect learning over time. At Gurrie, we recognize the power of showing up. Students who maintain a 95% attendance rate over their two years earn a special blue and gold cord to wear proudly at graduation. Let’s work together to make every day count!

Pick up and Drop off
To help keep our students safe during arrival, traffic on Spring Avenue between 53rd Street and 52nd Street will be one-way (south to north) from 8:00–8:30 am on school days.
  • During this time, vehicles will not be able to travel southbound on Spring Avenue between 52nd and 53rd.
  • At 8:30 am, the street will return to normal two-way traffic.
  • A barricade will be placed at the corner of Spring Avenue and 52nd at 8:00 am and removed at 8:30 am.
We also ask families to follow all traffic laws:
  • Do not pass a school bus while students are getting off.
  • If the bus has its stop sign extended, please wait until the sign is retracted before moving forward.
Thank you for your cooperation in helping us keep all students safe!

Parking around the School
At Gurrie, we are fortunate to be part of such an amazing community, and we want to continue being good neighbors. During drop-off, pick-up, and school events, please be mindful not to block driveways when parking. This helps us avoid any tickets for our families and keeps things running smoothly for everyone.

Thank you for your cooperation and for helping us take care of our community!

Policy on Outside Food Deliveries
We understand that sometimes you may need to drop off your child's lunch. We have a table in the entry hall where parents can leave lunches.

In previous school years, we've noticed an increase in food deliveries from services like Uber Eats, DoorDash, and other commercial delivery companies. Many times, these deliveries arrive after the student lunch period, leaving students without enough time to eat. Additionally, our front desk team is unable to manage these deliveries. To help things run smoothly, we do not accept outside food deliveries from companies like Uber Eats, DoorDash, or similar services. Please make sure your student either brings their lunch from home or enjoys the school lunch available to them. We appreciate your understanding and apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Sport Spectators

We warmly welcome students, parents, and community members to join us in cheering on our Tiger teams! To keep our students safe and ensure that parents know where their children are, we have the following policy in place:
  • Students who plan to attend the game should remain in the school building after dismissal. This allows us to supervise them continuously until the game begins.
  • If a student leaves the building after school, we are unable to monitor their whereabouts between dismissal and game time. For safety reasons, students who leave the building may only re-enter for the game if they are accompanied by a parent or guardian. Parents/guardian does need to stay with the student bust must accompany them back into the building and inform the game supervisor.
Thank you for helping us make Gurrie students and games safe and enjoyable for everyone!

Get Involved and Make the Most of Your Time at Gurrie!
Extracurricular activities are an excellent way for students to explore their interests, build friendships, and develop valuable skills such as teamwork, leadership, and time management. Students who participate in clubs, sports, music, or other extracurricular activities tend to have stronger connections to their school and achieve higher academic success levels.

At Gurrie, we offer a wide range of opportunities; there’s something for everyone! Whether it’s athletics, visual and performing arts, STEM, service clubs, or leadership groups, we encourage every student to get involved and try something new. Participating in just one activity can make a significant difference. We can’t wait to see where your students' interests take you! Remember, we have a late bus that leaves Gurrie at 4 pm and accommodates most activities.
